Summer is still going strong here at Candela, but there’s a change in the air, and we can all feel it. Back-to-school sales have begun in the neighboring stores, class schedules, and school supplies lists have started arriving in the mail, and you may have seen school buses on the road doing practice runs. That’s right. It’s that exciting time of year when kids are getting ready to return to school with Lamar CISD. We thought we’d take the opportunity to provide parents with some of our top tips for back-to-school success!
1. Establish a routine. The summer months are usually pretty carefree for school-aged children. With the new school year rapidly approaching, however, one of our top tips for back-to-school success is to begin reestablishing a routine early. Otherwise, that first week of school can be a shock for everyone. Establishing a routine can be as simple as setting a consistent bedtime, getting up at the same time every morning, having breakfast at the same time, and so on. All of that will help when it’s time to start getting on the school bus or making it to class on time every morning.
2. Plan their route. How do your kids get to school? Do they walk, ride their bikes, take the bus, or carpool? Will they be going to a new school this year, such as our very own on-site elementary, Bernard Clifton Terrell, Jr. Elementary School? Wherever they’re going and however they’ll get there, it’s a good idea to plan their route in advance and maybe even go over it a few times to practice. You can probably also find out where your child’s new classroom is going to be this year and help ensure that they know how to get there before the first day of school.
3. Get your shopping done early! Most schools provide their students with a list of all the items that they’ll need for a new school year, which can be a lot of help when it comes to back-to-school shopping! However, with so many parents helping their kids stock up—not to mention so many great back-to-school sales—those items often sell out quickly. It’s a good idea to do your shopping early so that everyone has what they need!

We’re especially pleased to welcome some of our youngest residents back to class at our very own Bernard Clifton Terrell, Jr. Elementary School, which first opened last school year. We’re so happy to have such an amazing elementary school right here in our community and to be part of the amazing Lamar CISD.
