Our New Year’s experiences can be a mixed bag. On the one hand, we’re all excited about the opportunities that come with a brand new year stretching out before us. On the other hand, many of us try too hard to make each new year the “best ever” in ways that feel too arduous and unattainable, so we give up within the first couple of weeks. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way! That’s why we’ve put together some New Year resolution ideas that are simple to adopt, easy to stick with, and healthy in almost every respect. Our top four healthy New Year’s resolutions are attainable, appealing, and altogether salubrious.

1. New Year, New Health and Fitness Goals. Health and fitness goals top tons of New Year’s resolution lists, but many of us associate working out with weight loss so we tend to get discouraged and give up on our ambitious goals within the first few weeks of the year. Maybe it’s time we changed our thinking about health and fitness this year. If you change how you think about your fitness and wellness goals, you just might find that they’re easier to stick with and accomplish.

Sure, getting outside and getting fresh air, sunshine, and a little activity in your day is good for your physical health, but it also does so much for your mental well-being. Even something as simple as taking a walk around the block improves your mood, boosts your energy, and helps you sleep better at the end of the day. Try to realign your thinking about health and fitness so that the journey, rather than the destination, becomes what’s important. Work out to feel good, not to change yourself.

Fortunately, Candela offers residents so many fun ways to enjoy better health! You can greet the sun on our yoga lawn, swim laps in the pool, or take your furry best friend to the dog park. Of course, we also have a fitness center if you really want to work up a sweat!

2. Take Up a New Hobby. Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but just never had the time for? Or maybe there’s something you’d never even heard of until this year, but it grabbed your imagination? This is a great time to go to the local library and pick up a few books on gardening, music, cooking, pottery—you name it! Grab a neighbor or friend and get them involved, too! Research has shown that folks who engage in new hobbies and leisure activities are less likely to suffer from stress and depression. Plus, you can improve your communication skills and your relationships by participating in a new hobby with other people. You can involve an old friend in a new undertaking or make new friends who enjoy the same hobby that you’ve just taken up!

3. Seek Out and Support Local Businesses. How many of us have lived in a place for years but have never been to the restaurant down the block or to the museum in town? You don’t need to plan a lengthy road trip for an adventure. All you have to do is step a little outside your comfort zone and visit one of the many local businesses and attractions that are just a few minutes from home at Candela. Go to a wine tasting at the Braman Winery and Brewery, get in a quick nine at the Meadowbrook Farms Golf Club, learn about the region’s history at the Fort Bend Museum, or pick up something delicious for dinner at Fulshear Farmers Market. Whatever you do, you’ll be supporting the local economy, building relationships with nearby businesses, and improving your own sense of community in the process!

4. Turn Off Your Phone. We know. We know. It sounds extreme, but it doesn’t need to be. Turning off your phone for just a few hours one night per week can have surprising benefits to your family relationships, your mental health, your personal time, and your sleep schedule. In fact, of all the items on this list, this one may be the most impactful in almost every respect, and it’s surprisingly easy to do. It’s as simple as shutting the phone off and putting it away a little earlier than you otherwise would one night a week. Take that extra time and put it toward something meaningful to you. Try it! You’ll like it!

For many of us, New Years resolution ideas are about looking forward and doing better, but healthy New Year’s resolutions give us a chance to do more than that. They’re a way to reflect on the previous year and approach tomorrow with a different outlook. They’re about being hopeful and optimistic about who you are and who you can be, about living your life with mindfulness, and about striving to live the way you want to live in the new year and beyond.

New Years resolution ideas are your chance to live your brightest life, but that doesn’t mean turning your back on the old one. It’s about finding what makes the world feel bright and worthwhile to you and focusing on things that are important going forward. It’s going to be a great year if you do!

Of course, we believe that there’s no better place to live your best and brightest life this year and every year than our 460-acre master planned community in Richmond, Texas. Candela is where small-town charm meets big-city convenience. Our residents have plenty of ways to stay healthy, make good friends, pursue new interests, enjoy everything that the local community has to offer and make the most of their time every day.
